10 Ways to Make Your Florida Beach Vacation More Affordable

1) Beware of hidden fees when booking a flight. You may think you re getting the best deal when using comparison sites like Orbitz or Kayak, but those sites don t necessarily account for baggage fees, securities fees, and other taxes.

2) When traveling from the airport to the hotel and back to the airport, book a shuttle or take public transportation instead of taking a cab. Unless, of course, you re in a hurry. But you shouldn t be in a hurry when on vacation. Either way, the cost of a cab certainly adds up if you re traveling longer than say, 5 or 10 minutes. Shuttle services are the best way to go, and often times you can pre-purchase a package on airport pick-up and drop-off, saving even more. It pays to think ahead!

3) Book a vacation rental versus a resort hotel. Florida hotels are notorious for charging an arm and a leg for water, having overpriced restaurants on the premises, charging extra for WiFi, and you have to eat out every night with no place to put leftover food plenty of hotels are doing away with refrigerators. Not to mention, they can be stuffy and loud with Spring Breakers. At a vacation rental, you can save hundreds just by having your own food.

4) If you opt to go the vacation rental route and have a fully-furnished kitchen, stock up on groceries at the beginning of your trip. This can get tricky if you don t have transportation, so a cab could be suitable here, or even a beach trolley. For a small fee (and yes, this pales in comparison to three meals a day at a restaurant) some property management companies can provide grocery services or have your rental pre-stocked with food.

5) Pre-pack your backs with plenty of snacks, non-refrigerated items, and non-perishables. This will save you on grocery services once you get to your destination, although make sure you don t overload your luggage or you ll have to pay extra on the flight. Take only what you need. Oatmeal, granola bars, chips, cans of tuna, almonds, and water bottles tend to travel well.

6) Go for early-bird specials whenever possible. Everyone wants to go out and experience the local food, especially when it comes to Florida s seafood, but you can save quite a bit when you go around or before 5:00 p.m.

7) Early-bird specials don t just apply to restaurants. They apply to things like wave runner rentals, fishing trips, and ferry boat service. If you book your rental before, say, 11:00 a.m., you might be able to get a 10% discount. A lot of these companies offer weekday specials as well since weekends offer a much higher demand.

8) Pre-plan your trip by visiting all the websites of places you intend to go. Follow these destinations on social media Facebook and Twitter if they re on there. Look for Groupons in the area and print them out. You ll be amazed how many places offer $10 off coupons on their websites. You can also find spur-of-the-moment deals on social media sites, where loyal followers are rewarded for their patronage and interaction.

9) Consider vacationing in the off-season. Florida has year-round beautiful weather and you may even enjoy the cool fall breeze or early spring. Water will be chillier but crowds are diminished at attractions and theme parks. You ll have more room to wiggle your toes in the sand. You ll save a boat load of money just by booking an off-season vacation rental too, although the same can t necessarily be said for hotels.

10) If you re a person that has to have access to a gym, why not take your workouts outdoors instead of looking for a gym? There are tons and tons of parks on Florida s beaches. They re safe, well-lit, and give you a chance to move freely while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. A lot of smaller vacation rentals and hotels offer guest passes to local gyms. Check with your concierge service for guest passes and coupons before going to the gym directly. Many of these property management companies have partnerships with local businesses and are a source for great deals on attractions.
