If you break a bone or have some other type of bone problem, you would more than likely see orthopedists, also known as orthopedic surgeons. These doctors practice a branch of medicine that uses both surgical and non-surgical means to repair musculoskeletal injuries and deformities. These problems are often related to sports injuries, infections, tumors, and degenerative childhood diseases. The name orthopedics is derived from two Greek words orthos and paideion when put together mean “straight-child” and is often used on children to correct deformities in the spine and other problems with the bones. These children are often born with these deformities.Orthopedic surgeons usually deal with patients with some type of musculoskeletal injury. Orthopedic surgeons use general anesthesia on the patients while they perform their surgeries and often are able to land a great job for life in a local hospital, teaching school, or a private practice office. The future often looks bright for these specialists, especially in areas that are away from the big cities where good doctors are not as easy to find. The pay scale for orthopedic surgeons is roughly between $100,000 and $500,000 a year, depending on your experience and ability. The pay also depends on where your practice is located as often the professionals in private practice are on a higher pay scale because the competition is not as high.If you desire to follow this path, you will need to earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in either pre-med, or biology. Then you will need to finish four years of medical school then complete a hospital residency, which also lasts about four years. This residency usually includes general surgery with specialty training. After you have completed all the required schooling, you must apply for a medical practice license in the state that you wish to practice. To do this, you must pass the Medical Licensing Exam. You must apply to be re-certified every 7-10 years so that your license stays up to date and you can continue to practice your skill. There are many skills that are required for you to become a good orthopedic surgeon. These include having a complete understanding of any new technologies being used in the surgical field, ethics within the medical field, pharmacology so that you can prescribe the right medicines for your patients, and physiology. You will also need to have an understanding of what contributes to the health of the musculoskeletal system and how to prevent and treat disease. You must also have the stamina to work the long hours that are required with this career. If you desire to follow this path, the future is great for you. If you have the patience, your dream can come true and you can have a great future in the medical field.

UN official: Gaza faces humanitarian catastrophe

Although Israel briefly lifted its blockade of crossings in the Gaza Strip today, United Nations (UN) officials warn that a further blockade could lead to dire consequences for some 750,000 Gazans who rely on UN food aid. Israel blockaded the Gaza Strip in early November, preventing access for UN aid workers and journalists.

The border crossing was opened to allow some food aid and medical supplies through, however, United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) spokesman Christopher Gunness warned that “it is just not enough.”

The UNRWA also warns that Gaza faces “a humanitarian catastrophe.” Karen Abu Zayd, commissioner general of UNRWA, said the death toll since the beginning of the Israeli blockade is the gravest since the early days of the Palestinian intifada eight years ago. The Israeli blockade has shut down power for the Gaza Strip, and patients at local hospitals are in grave risk of death because of faulty generators.

“Almost every part of the intensive care unit runs on electricity which comes from Gaza’s main power plant […] that plant is run on fuel from Israel, but no supplies have reached the plant for well over a week now,” said Al Jazeera‘s correspondent in Gaza.

Israel closed the Gaza Strip on November 5 because of rocket fire emanating from the area after the Israeli army units entered and carried out an operation against members of the Hamas combat wing. Currently all foreign journalists are banned from entering Gaza. AP, Reuters, the New York Times, the BBC, CNN and other major news organizations have protested the blockade.

Sarkozy appoints François Fillon as Prime Minister of France

Thursday, May 17, 2007File:Francois fillon1.jpg

The new President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy has appointed François Fillon to head the new French government. Fillon’s predecessor Dominique de Villepin stepped down yesterday, and formally handed over the post during a ceremony today.

The nomination did not come as a surprise after the British newspaper the Financial Times had reported on May 8 that Sarkozy had introduced Fillon to Tony Blair in a telephone conversation.

François Fillon (53) has been the political advisor of Sarkozy in the UMP for the past 2 years, and he was Sarko’s campaign leader during the recent presidential elections. Fillon has experience in negotiating with the trade unions, having undertaken controversial reforms of the 35-hour workweek and the pension system. Sarkozy in his inauguration speech on Wednesday reiterated his plans to reform the French labour and social system, and Fillon will have to oversee these reforms as the new Prime Minister. Sarkozy said he wants to make the economy more flexible and lessen social tensions.

I expect I’ll end up being the first French premier with a Welsh wife.

The Guardian reported that Fillon is an Anglophile; his wife Penelope Clarke, with whom he has 5 children, was born in Wales. Ideologically, Fillon is being described as a moderate left-leaning member of the conservative UMP party.

Fillon had his first experience as a minister in 1993 when he became Minister for the Higher education and Research under PM Édouard Balladur. He later became Minister for the Post office, Telecommunications and Space, then Minister for the social Affairs, Work and Solidarity, and finally Minister for national Education, the Higher education and Research. At the university, he studied public law and political sciences.

Sarkozy might announce his cabinet of 15 ministers as early as Friday, half of which are going to be women, he said. Fillon will lead the UMP in the parliamentary elections next month. A poll on Wednesday predicted a 1.5% increase in votes for the UMP, up to 40%, compared to 28% status-quo for the allied socialists.

Reports say that Sarkozy has offered the foreign minister post to Bernard Kouchner, co-founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, who is seen as being on the left in French politics.

Grand Opening Party Ideas Part 3

May 31, 2021 · Digital Marketing · (No comments)

By Andrew Hallinan

As we have covered before, onsite, outdoor advertisements are a great investment because they communicate a lot of information to potential customers in a very short message exchanged over a very short amount of time. Another excellent source of advertising is word of mouth. Gossip spreads and people love to talk, and in this case, that can translate into free advertising for your business. The final leg of advertising your grand opening party is through the idea of ‘divide and conquer’. We have covered some pretty big grand opening ideas and means of promoting your new business. These final ideas are so you can add all the little extra advertising help possible for your new venture.

— Use your grand opening party to start off on a nice, friendly note with your business neighbors. Invite businesses close to yours to set up a booth for their own company outside, as a part of your own celebration. This will lay the foundations for a great partnership in the coming years and provide more access to services for your new customers.

— Extend the same invitation to your vendors and manufactures, offering space for them set up banners and booths in appreciation for their services to your business.

— Be sure to budget for and set aside some petty cash. Your big first day (and especially the week leading up to it) will bring some surprises and you will be glad to have the means to save some time and make whatever unexpected that comes be a little easier to handle.

— Since your Grand Opening Party is so important, and you want as many people to attend for as long as possible, be prepared for, and excited to see guests stay longer than normal business hours. If future customers are sticking around, that’s a very good sign. They should not be turned away or asked to leave.

— People are expecting all the ‘little’ promotionals such as pens, magnets, and business cards. Take advantage of that and try to find a way for everyone who stops by your festivities to go home with one of each. These will filter and spider out to portions of your local neighborhood that did not make it to your grand opening, expanding the circle of those who have seen your advertising.

— Another way to spread the word near and far of your new business and the services it will provide its customers and the surrounding community, is to hand out fliers. This is a great job for a couple of groups of high school students to work together at some local hotspots.

— In all the focus on outdoor advertisements and ideas for planning for your grand opening party, don’t forget to utilize the internet, particularly Facebook and Twitter. Facebook especially, often has groups based on geographical location. Use your new business’ account for each of those types of online networking and have free advertising on the world wide web.

Besides Facebook and Twitter, don’t forget to post a few ads on different sections of Craigslist in the days leading up to your grand opening, describing your new business and the party you will be throwing for its first day.

RU486 debate complicates with amendments posed in Australian House of Representatives

RU486 debate complicates with amendments posed in Australian House of Representatives
May 31, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

The ongoing debate over whether the Australian Health Minister Tony Abbott, or the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulate the abortifacient mifepristone (RU486) has complicated with a number of members proposing amendments to the Senate bill, now in the House of Representatives.

Jackie Kelly (Australian Liberal Party, Lindsay) has said that “There should be a transparent process in which the minister is accountable for his or her decision” on so-called restricted goods (of which RU486 is such a good) as listed in the TGA legislation. Kelly has proposed an amendment with points stating that “the Minister for Health and Ageing continuing to have the decision making role in relation to the approval of restricted goods…”, “the Minister being required to obtain written advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration prior to giving written approval or refusal to approve”, “the Minister’s decision being subject to disallowance”.

In the debate on February 14, Andrew Laming (Liberal, Bowman) noted his intent to propose an amendment in the later consideration in detail stage, noting his views that the TGA process is “so far removed…from the concerns and the beliefs of the community” and that he is “unable to convince [himself] that completely leaving these decisions to the TGA is the right thing to do”. His amendment loosely aims to propose a “disallowable instrument in Parliament where there is a disagreement with the findings of the TGA.”

The introduction of amendments has caused confusion on procedural matters February 15 in the Questions to the Speaker period (that follows Question Time), where members can ask questions of the Speaker on procedural and other technical matters. In the following vote on the proposed legislation, if one of the votes on the amendments succeeds, this has the effect of discontinuing the other amendment proposals, as each of the amendments proposed has the effect of being a complete alternative bill.

The RU486 debate will have precedence over all other matters in the House until it is dealt with. Voting is expected on Thursday.

Imperfect immune systems help avoid autoimmune disease

Imperfect immune systems help avoid autoimmune disease
May 29, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Thursday, September 15, 2005

The body’s immune system is less effective at quashing disease than it could be – but if it were better the immune system might do more harm than good, according to new research by Michael Deem and colleagues of Rice University in Houston.

The immune system has apparently evolved to be mildly inefficient so that it achieves a balance between quick response to disease and decreased probability of autoimmune disease, a condition in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue.

The authors drew their conclusions from a model of the dynamics of antibody evolution. Their simulations show that while there are mechanisms that would allow the immune system to develop antibodies that respond faster and more strongly against invading pathogens, those mechanisms would also create antibodies that are likely to attack the body’s own healthy cells. The model also bolsters controversial suggestions that chronic infections could lead the immune system awry, ultimately resulting in rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune ailments.

The study will be detailed in a forthcoming issue of the journal Physical Review Letters.

A report accidentally published on the Internet provides insight into a secretive European Union surveillance project designed to monitor its citizens, as reported by Wikileaks earlier this month. Project INDECT aims to mine data from television, internet traffic, cellphone conversations, p2p file sharing and a range of other sources for crime prevention and threat prediction. The €14.68 million project began in January, 2009, and is scheduled to continue for five years under its current mandate.

INDECT produced the accidentally published report as part of their “Extraction of Information for Crime Prevention by Combining Web Derived Knowledge and Unstructured Data” project, but do not enumerate all potential applications of the search and surveillance technology. Police are discussed as a prime example of users, with Polish and British forces detailed as active project participants. INDECT is funded under the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), and includes participation from Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Indicated in the initial trial’s report, the scope of data collected is particularly broad; days of television news, radio, newspapers, and recorded telephone conversations are included. Several weeks of content from online sources were agglomerated, including mining Wikipedia for users’ and article subjects’ relations with others, organisations, and in-project movements.

Watermarking of published digital works such as film, audio, or other documents is discussed in the Project INDECT remit; its purpose is to integrate and track this information, its movement within the system and across the Internet. An unreleased promotional video for INDECT located on YouTube is shown to the right. The simplified example of the system in operation shows a file of documents with a visible INDECT-titled cover taken from an office and exchanged in a car park. How the police are alerted to the document theft is unclear in the video; as a “threat”, it would be the INDECT system’s job to predict it.

Throughout the video use of CCTV equipment, facial recognition, number plate reading, and aerial surveillance give friend-or-foe information with an overlaid map to authorities. The police proactively use this information to coordinate locating, pursuing, and capturing the document recipient. The file of documents is retrieved, and the recipient roughly detained.

Technology research performed as part of Project INDECT has clear use in countering industrial and international espionage, although the potential use in maintaining any security and predicting leaks is much broader. Quoted in the UK’s Daily Telegraph, Liberty’s director, Shami Chakrabarti, described a possible future implementation of INDECT as a “sinister step” with “positively chilling” repercussions Europe-wide.

“It is inevitable that the project has a sensitive dimension due to the security focussed goals of the project,” Suresh Manandhar, leader of the University of York researchers involved in the “Work Package 4” INDECT component, responded to Wikinews. “However, it is important to bear in mind that the scientific methods are much more general and has wider applications. The project will most likely have lot of commercial potential. The project has an Ethics board to oversee the project activities. As a responsible scientists [sic] it is of utmost importance to us that we conform to ethical guidelines.”

Should the EU carry out this research without a wider public debate?

Although Wikinews attempted to contact Professor Helen Petrie of York University, the local member of Project INDECT’s Ethics board, no response was forthcoming. The professor’s area of expertise is universal access, and she has authored a variety of papers on web-accessibility for blind and disabled users. A full list of the Ethics board members is unavailable, making their suitability unassessable and distancing them from public accountability.

One potential application of Project INDECT would be implementation and enforcement of the U.K.’s “MoD Manual of Security“. The 2,389-page 2001 version passed to Wikileaks this month — commonly known as JSP-440, and marked “RESTRICTED” — goes into considerable detail on how, as a serious threat, investigative journalists should be monitored, and effectively thwarted; just the scenario the Project INDECT video could be portraying.

When approached by Wikinews about the implications of using INDECT, a representative of the U.K.’s Attorney General declined to comment on legal checks and balances such a system might require. Further U.K. enquiries were eventually referred to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, who have not yet responded.

Wikinews’ Brian McNeil contacted Eddan Katz, the International Affairs Director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.). Katz last spoke to Wikinews in early 2008 on copyright, not long after taking his current position with the E.F.F. He was back in Brussels to speak to EU officials, Project INDECT was on his agenda too — having learned of it only two weeks earlier. Katz linked Project INDECT with a September report, NeoConopticon — The EU Security-Industrial Complex, authored by Ben Hayes for the Transnational Institute. The report raises serious questions about the heavy involvement of defence and IT companies in “security research”.

On the record, Katz answered a few questions for Wikinews.

((WN)) Is this illegal? Is this an invasion of privacy? Spying on citizens?

Eddan Katz When the European Parliament issued the September 5, 2001 report on the American ECHELON system they knew such an infrastructure is in violation of data protection law, undermines the values of privacy and is the first step towards a totalitarian surveillance information society.

((WN)) Who is making the decisions based on this information, about what?

E.K. What’s concerning to such a large extent is the fact that the projects seem to be agnostic to that question. These are the searching systems and those people that are working on it in these research labs do search technology anyway. […] but its inclusion in a database and its availability to law enforcement and its simultaneity of application that’s so concerning, […] because the people who built it aren’t thinking about those questions, and the social questions, and the political questions, and all this kind of stuff. [… It] seems like it’s intransparent, unaccountable.

The E.U. report Katz refers to was ratified just six days before the September 11 attacks that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center. In their analysis of the never-officially-recognised U.S. Echelon spy system it states, “[i]n principle, activities and measures undertaken for the purposes of state security or law enforcement do not fall within the scope of the EC Treaty.” On privacy and data-protection legislation enacted at E.U. level it comments, “[such does] not apply to ‘the processing of data/activities concerning public security, defence, state security (including the economic well-being of the state when the activities relate to state security matters) and the activities of the state in areas of criminal law'”.

Part of the remit in their analysis of Echelon was rumours of ‘commercial abuse’ of intelligence; “[i]f a Member State were to promote the use of an interception system, which was also used for industrial espionage, by allowing its own intelligence service to operate such a system or by giving foreign intelligence services access to its territory for this purpose, it would undoubtedly constitute a breach of EC law […] activities of this kind would be fundamentally at odds with the concept of a common market underpinning the EC Treaty, as it would amount to a distortion of competition”.

Ben Hayes’ NeoConoptiocon report, in a concluding section, “Following the money“, states, “[w]hat is happening in practice is that multinational corporations are using the ESRP [European Seventh Research Programme] to promote their own profit-driven agendas, while the EU is using the programme to further its own security and defence policy objectives. As suggested from the outset of this report, the kind of security described above represents a marriage of unchecked police powers and unbridled capitalism, at the expense of the democratic system.”

Power of Bollinger Bands Strategies in Forex Trading

by

ForexAbode.com

Bollinger bands are good when the market is not trending but can give an early indication of emerging trends. many times we just have Bollinger Bands on our trading charts even if we are not using these for our primary source of trading signals.

Bollinger bands can provide some good winning signals if used with other indicators/oscillators like Stochastic. let’s see how to work with these combinations and what we should look for. It’s always advisable to keep a track of the changing volatility and that’s what Bollinger bands indicate. The change in the volatility may indicate some major moves or breakouts and in such cases it is always better to be prepared to enter the market before it is too late. What we need to look for in Bollinger bands is as follows: 1) Are the bands widening?: Widening of the Bollinger bands indicate that the market volatility in increasing. This indicates possibilities of further move in the ongoing direction. But before we take a position we should have confirmation of the current direction. 2) Are the bands tightening?: tightening of Bollinger bands indicate that the volatility is decreasing in the market. Is it the silence before the storm and is a major breakout on the way? If a major breakout is on the way then we need to check the possible direction of the breakout. 1-a) Bullish widening Bollinger Bands: – The bands are widening with the upper band moving sharply upwards and the lower and moving sharply downwards. – The price-action is moving upwards above the middle band. – The recent candle sticks are longer than the previous candlesticks Action: – Check if RSI (Relative Strength Index) is in the range of 30 to 50 and rising. – You may also check if ADX is rising towards 25 and/or beyond 25 and +DI line is crossing -DI line. – Also check if Slow Stochastic is crossing the stochastic signal line upwards. – With all the above taking place, we can expect a further upward movement. It will better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles to confirm the trend and then take a long (buy) position. There is always a possibility that before a further upward move, a downward correction may take place. The wait of 2 or 3 candles may help in increasing our profits if we can take a position during that correction and market moves as we expected. In case the market does not behave the way we expected and moves opposite, this wait will help in reducing the loss. If ADX does not move above 25 then the upward move may be limited and hence the profit taking will be limited 1-b) Bearish widening Bollinger Bands: – The bands are widening with the upper band moving sharply upwards and the lower and moving sharply downwards. – The price-action is moving downwards below the middle band. – The recent candle sticks are longer than the previous candlesticks. Action: – Check if RSI (Relative Strength Index) is in the range of 55 to 75 and is falling. – You may also check if ADX is rising towards 25/beyond 25 and -DI line crossing +DI line. – Check if Slow Stochastic is crossing the signal line downwards. – With all the above taking place, we can expect a further downward move. It will be safer and hence better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles for confirmation of the trend before taking a short position. It also happens that before a further downward move there may be some upward correction and to wait for 2 or 3 candles may help in increasing the profits or reducing the losses if we can enter during the correction, as mentioned in point 1-a. If ADX does not move above 25 (market not trending) then the downward move may be short-lived and hence the profit taking will be also be limited. 2-a) Bullish tightening Bollinger bands: The pattern happens with a prolonged sideways move with less volatility (short candlesticks) – Check if there are minimum 2 continuous bullish candlesticks (green) which are longer than previous 2 to 3 candlesticks. – Check if Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in the range of 30 to 50 and rising. – You may also check if ADX is rising towards 25/beyond 25 and +DI crossing -DI. – Check if Slow Stochastic is crossing the signal line upwards. – If all above are taking place then we can expect an upward breakout. It will be safer and hence better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles for confirmation before taking a buy position with a red candle. If ADX does not move above 25 (market not trending) then the upward move may be short-lived and hence the profit taking will also be limited 2-b) Bearish tightening Bollinger bands: The pattern happens with an extended sideways move and also with volatility being less (short candlesticks). – Check if there are minimum 2 continuous bearish candlesticks (red) which are longer than previous 2 to 3 candlesticks. – Check if Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in the range of 40 to 60 and falling. – You may also check if ADX is rising towards 25/beyond 25 and -DI crossing +DI. – Check if Slow Stochastic is crossing the signal line downwards. – If all above are taking place then we can expect a downward breakout. It will be safer and hence better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles for confirmation before taking a sell position with a red candle. If ADX does not move above 25 then the upward move may be limited and hence the profit taking will be limited. 3-a) Continuation of uptrend after correction During an ongoing uptrend the price may reverse to the middle band or even towards the lower band. – Check if Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in the range of 30 to 50 and rising. – We can also take a note of ADX to see if the ADX is above 25 and +DI line is over -DI line. – Check if Slow Stochastic is over the signal which indicates a bullish configuration. – With all the above we can expect the continuation of the ongoing uptrend. It is safer and better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles to have a confirmation that the recent opposite move was just a correction and then take a buy position 3-b) Continuation of downtrend after correction During an ongoing downtrend the price may reverse to the middle band or even towards the upper band. – Check if Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in the range of 55 to 75 and falling. – We can also take a note of ADX to see if the ADX is above 25 and -DI line is above +DI line. – Check if Slow Stochastic is below the signal line which indicates a bearish configuration. – With all the above we can expect the continuation of the ongoing downtrend. It is safer and better to wait for 2 or 3 more candles to have a confirmation that the recent move in opposite direction was just a correction before taking a short position. Have a good trading.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life
May 26, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

This exclusive interview features first-hand journalism by a Wikinews reporter. See the collaboration page for more details.
