Katharine Close, 13, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee
July 17, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Friday, June 2, 2006

Katharine “Kerry” Close, a 13-year-old 8th-grader from Asbury Park, New Jersey, spelled “ursprache“, a word for the ancestor of a language or language group, to win the 79th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. Close beat out 274 other contestants from 9 to 15 years old. This was Close’s last year of eligibility; she was one of only two contestants this year to be in her fifth year at the national competition. She finished seventh in 2005, having gotten a better ranking every year she’s competed.

This is the Bee’s first appearance on network television, with the finals airing on ABC; earlier rounds were televised in the afternoon on ESPN. Close, who enjoys running, music, reading, and her puppy, is the first New Jersey resident ever to win the competition, which she prepared for up to two hours each day.

Saryn Hooks, 14, was nearly eliminated in the eighth round, with “hechsher”, a symbol indicating that a food has been certified kosher. The judges mistakenly had the word down as “hechscher”; after being removed, she was reinstated in the next round after the judges received the correction. Hooks, who spent six months reading the entire dictionary to prepare, came back with confidence and finished in third place, missing “icteritious” in round twelve. This is the first time the judges have made such a visible error in the televised broadcast.

Kendra Yoshinaga, 12, of Thousand Oaks, California, a favorite for the finals, was knocked out in the seventh round just before the ABC broadcast began by “cointise”, a scarf worn on a lady’s headdress. Yoshinaga said that this third national bee she’s competed in felt “a lot more rigid” than the previous two.

This year’s schedule was rearranged for the ABC news broadcast: previous championships have been held earlier in the day. The spellers have all been given more media attention; for this reason Yoshinaga is perhaps one of the few who didn’t want to win, claiming that it would be too much. She has already received her share of attention, as co-author of The Spelling Bee And Me: A Real-Life Adventure In Learning, a children’s book about her experiences.

“People I don’t know very well seem to make a big deal about it, but my really close friends know that it’s not a really huge part of my life,” she says, of her relative fame. Keenly interested in politics and social issues, Yoshinaga spent a large portion of her last two trips sightseeing in Washington, but this trip, she says, has been more focused on studying.

“My mom sometimes finds words for me from books and magazines,” says the homeschooler, who studied over 30,000 words in the week preceding the national bee. Paige Kimble, bee coordinator, wouldn’t have been surprised to see her break into the top ten.

Another favorite eliminated earlier on in the competition was Samir Patel, who tied for second in last year’s 19-round marathon and placed third in 2003. Patel misspelled “eremacausis” in round 7, joining Yoshinaga and 6 others in a tie for 14th place.

The studious 12-year-old has one more chance at the national finals; Yoshinaga has two, as students may compete from their fourth through eighth grade years.

Cody Boisclair, a 23-year-old graduate student at the University of Georgia, misses the competition. He competed in the 1997 and 1998 finals, placing fourth in his second try. The Bee has changed since he began participating, becoming more international, and with increased media attention putting more pressure on spellers. Though many critics claim that the rote memorization and drilling of spelling bees is not a particularly beneficial activity, Boisclair believes his experience in the bee helped his knowledge of language rather than serving as a simple display of memory.

“I was one of those people who tried to dissect the word into its component parts, to find similarities to other words that I was familiar with,” says Boisclair, who began reading at the age of two. “Although I did do some drilling, I tried to find relationships to help me remember words, and even tried to analyze the words I was studying as I studied them.” His analysis skills led him not to a career in lexicography or linguistics but rather to graduate study in computer science.

Boisclair, who spent the evening watching the Bee on television while in a chat room with several other former national finalists, looks back on the competition as one of the highlights of his school years. “I think the best thing about it was a sense of camaraderie—for once, I really felt like I fit in somewhere. I was with people my age who were, by and large, ‘on the same wavelength’.” Also, Jasmine Kaneshiro, 14, from Honolulu, Hawaii, was not a favorite, having done quite badly last year, did better. She moved up from 72nd place in the 2005 bee to 45th place. It was her second year. “I’m pleased with my performance this year,” Kaneshiro said.

As one of the most important systems in the home, the plumbing system must be properly maintained or problems can develop causing a homeowner a big headache. One of the most annoying plumbing problems is a toilet leak. A toilet leak is not only frustrating, but it can waste water and increase your water bill. Signs of a toilet leak can include: sounds coming from the toilet when it is not running, a homeowner has to keep the handle pressed so that the tank will empty, the water is running over the top of the overflow, water is running down the sides of toilet even when there is flushing, and the toilet continues to run even though the handle has not been pressed. These are visible indications that you may have a toilet leak; however, you can still have a toilet leak and not see or hear it. This type of leak is called a silent toilet leak. To properly diagnose a silent toilet leak there are a couple of tests that you can perform:

1. For most homeowners, performing a dye test for a silent toilet leak is a popular choice. Purchase dye from a plumbing supplier or water company. It is usually a red dye. Once you have acquired the dye, you can start to perform the leak test. First, remove the cover of the water tank. Remove any substance such as a drain cleaner that may be colouring the water. It is important that you have clear water to do the test. Put enough dye in the tank water so that there is a deep colour. Wait for about a half hour and then check to see if the water in the bowl has turned the colour of the dye. If the water has colour, then you definitely have a toilet leak.

2. Another silent toilet leak detecting test you can perform is to turn the water off at the water pipe that runs to the toilet before you go to bed. Check the water level in the morning. If you discover there is water loss in the tank, then you have a toilet leak.

Toilet leaks toilets are responsible for a large volume of water waste as a toilet leak can waste as much 500 gallons of water a day; which is clearly not good water conservation. Reasons for a toilet leak can include: worn out flapper or ball, damaged seat beneath the flapper, damaged gasket under the flush valve, hole or crack in the overflow tube, and a new seat or washer is needed for a ballcock.

Because a silent leak cannot be seen or heard, many homeowners do not realize they have a toilet leak until it is a serious problem and they have wasted a huge amount of water. Testing for silent leaks should be added to your plumbing system maintenance program. The benefit of testing for silent toilet leaks is you will save money on your water bills, practice responsible water conservation, and ensure that your toilet runs properly which is a definite necessity.

New Zealand police want bus driver to pay reparation
July 15, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Christchurch, New Zealand Redbus bus driver Micheal Sean Ohiomhair, 57-year-old, is being sought for NZ$9000 by the New Zealand Police for wasting time and resources after he filed a false statement that a woman had attacked him. The police had put 100 hours into the hunt for the attacker.

The Christchurch District Court found out today that the injuries he sustained were self-inflicted. Ohiomhair changed his plead to guilty to the charges of making a false statement after originally pleading not guilty. Serina Bailey, defence council, said “57-year-old Ohiomhair had originally pleaded not guilty because there were medical and psychological issues I wished to raise”. Her client has now consulted mental health services for on-going psychological matters.

Police and ambulance personnel were called to the scene on May 10 at 2045 (NZST), when Ohiomhair told the police that a woman had attacked him while he was at a bus stop in Hornby, Christchurch. The ambulance staff treated him at the scene for injuries he sustained to his forearm and the left side of his head.

The police and police dogs then searched the area but failed to find the alleged woman attacker. After reconfirming what happened the police told him that it appeared his reconfirmation appeared incorrect, he then left the station but later appeared back at the station and confessed to making it up.

This incident followed an original incident when a different bus driver was attacked by teenage girls.

Ohiomhair will appear back in court, after he was remanded on bail, on September 15 for a probation report, a reparation report and sentencing.

Mark Berryman, Police prosecutor Sergeant, said “He said he received information from a family member two hours before, which caused him to become stressed and confused,” the information he had received was relating to an incident that happened 25 years ago.

Britain unveils flu pandemic preparedness plan, buys 14m courses of treatment drug

Britain unveils flu pandemic preparedness plan, buys 14m courses of treatment drug
July 14, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

The government of the United Kingdom has unveiled their strategy to deal with any future influenza pandemic in their Pandemic Influenza Contingency Plan.

The document, based on the World Health Organization’s framework for responses, explains how the UK would respond to a major outbreak of flu.

Any flu pandemic would differ from the seasonal outbreaks of flu observed worldwide every year. While seasonal flu kills 12,000 Britons annually, a pandemic would affect far more people and could result in the deaths of up to 50,000 people in the UK if there were no medical intervention.

The government will have the power to cancel events where large numbers of people gather, such as football (soccer) matches. It could also advise travel restrictions to and from areas of high infection, but would not be able to enforce any such measures.

Schools might be closed in the event of a flu pandemic, and infected people would be asked to remain at home, although again no quarantine measures could be imposed by the government.

Further plans include education of the public to recognize symptoms of the flu and how to avoid infection.

Measures will be made to maintain basic services in the event of a pandemic despite staff absences through illness.

A major cornerstone of the plan is the prescription of oseltamivir, an oral neuraminidase inhibitor drug that combats influenza. The drug is currently marketed by Hoffman La Roche under the trade name Tamiflu®.

The UK Department of Health intends to stockpile 14.6m courses of the drug over the next two financial years, giving enough to treat one in four of the population – the ratio recommended by the WHO.

Canada and Australia have also bought the equivalent amounts of anti-viral drugs. The U.S. has also bought large amounts of similar drugs.

The total cost of the acquisition was not published by the government, but the BBC estimated the cost to be £180 million.

Unlike a vaccine, oseltamivir can be used to treat any strain of the influenza virus. Many new variants of the influenza virus are seen every year, and combined with the long lead times associated with the development of vaccinces, mass vaccination is frequently impractical.

Some parts of the newly-revealed plan already exist. The UK government recently gave £500,000 to the WHO for survellience of so-called ‘bird flu’ in South East Asia, a possible source for any future pandemic. The Department of Health will also continue to monitor flu-like cases seen by doctors and hospitals.

Thursday, March 6, 2008

The 2008 Taipei County Jin Shi International Marathon which was established in 1979 and suspended from 1986 to 2001 before being transformed from “Jin Shan” to “Jin Shi” with its racing scale expanded, crossed through three townships including Wanli, Jinshan, and Shihmen was held last Sunday (March 2 in Taipei Time). Not only professional runners from Asian and European countries participated in this race, but several enterprises, governmental and academic teams also supported this race by participating in 6K Fun Run classes.

Even though the Central Weather Bureau warned of an impending dust storm, good weather graced this race with rain-free conditions. Another challenge for the runners in the 21K and 42K classes was cold winds due to the race route partially including coast line.

Finally, Belgian marathon runner Rik Ceulemans, men’s record holder of this race, extended his record with 2H18m13s to win the men’s championship, and Yu-fang Hsu, women’s champion of 2007 ING Taipei Marathon, won her title at women’s class with 2H53m39s. Coincidently, Wen-chien Wu and Wan-ling Wu, former champions of this race, all won the second place in their own gender class.

As a recap for the race, not only runners gave their best performances in this race, but several foreign teams — especially from Okinawa, Japan — played a great role adding a cultural exchange aspect to the event. Bros Sports, the race organizer, supervised by Taipei County Government in this race, some senior managers from Bros Sports hoped organizations from the sports industry could arrange the best integration of several marathon races in Taiwan in the future even though Bros Sports promoted a special attempt this year with three marathon races including Jin Shi, Dajia Mazu, and UMC Hsinchu stages.

‘Jelly bellies’ memo costs Florida police chief his job

‘Jelly bellies’ memo costs Florida police chief his job
July 13, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Winter Haven, Florida police chief Paul Goward was tired of seeing fat hanging out over the belts of some of his officers. So he posted a memo to encourage the so-called ‘jelly bellies’ to get in shape.

The memo, entitled ‘Are You A Jelly Belly?’ didn’t single anyone out, and, apart from the title, didn’t call anyone names.

Goward, a former deputy police chief in Wichita, wrote “If you are unfit, do yourself and everyone else a favor. See a professional about a proper diet and a fitness training program, quit smoking, limit alcohol intake…Don’t mean to offend, this is just straight talk. I owe it to you.”

It provided a list of 10 reasons cops should get fit. Goward said that overweight cops poorly represent the profession, are liable to ‘poop out’ when chasing suspects, and may have to use a higher degree of force.

In the end, Goward resigned from his position as police chief.

Are Natural Skin Care Products With Pomegranates A Good Choice?

July 12, 2021 · Fitness Equipment · (No comments)

By Gloria MacTaggart

If you’ve been watching women’s television or checking for new skin care products on the shelves, you may have heard of pomegranates as the latest and greatest ingredient. With such a huge number of natural skin care products being promoted as containing the ‘magic’ ingredient that will get rid of wrinkles and restore that youthful look, it would be helpful to know more about pomegranates before you run down to the store and empty your wallet. Do pomegranates really have something so special to offer that you should make them a staple in your natural skin care larder?

Although pomegranates have been used for centuries in natural medicine in many parts of the world, we are only recently seeing it on the shelves here in the U.S. Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the pomegranate’s healing power and, yes, the results are outstanding.

Pomegranate juice lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, improves cardiovascular function and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. It also enhances fertility, reduces the symptoms of menopause and has even been effective at slowing the spread of cancer cells. A recent study conducted by University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) showed that a daily glass of pomegranate juice slowed the growth rate of prostate cancer.

In addition to the many studies conducted on its internal use, new research has also proven it to be effective for topical natural skin care and we now have a few creams, lotions, cleansing products, masques available.

How do pomegranates benefit the skin? High in Vitamins A, C and E, the real magic is in its antioxidant content – no surprise really; the damage inflicted by free radicals is now well-known and acknowledged even by the most conservative in the medical establishment. The pomegranate’s antioxidant content is very high, making it a shoo-in for natural skin care.

Dry skin, problem skin, aging skin, wrinkles – all can benefit from the pomegranate. It fights free radicals and stimulates the growth of collagen – vital for damaged, dry skin and tissue of any kind, and especially noticeable in its absence in the aging and wrinkled face.

If you don’t have cleansers and exfoliating products that are working for you now or you would like to switch to the healthier alternative of natural skin care, by all means give the pomegranate a try. While you’re at it, pick up a bottle of the juice. Internal and external natural skin care will increase your chances of deriving all the benefits.

Total evacuation of New Orleans planned

Total evacuation of New Orleans planned

A state of emergency has been enacted in New Orleans in the U.S. state of Louisiana today, after the devastating Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Monday. There were earlier erroneous reports by the news media that martial law had been imposed. Mayor Ray Nagin fears that there may be “thousands” of fatalities in his city alone.

Many hospital staff are struggling without power and supplies. As many as 2,500 patients from hospitals in Orleans Parish were to be evacuated, according to US Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, but where they could be sent was still uncertain.

Looters are roaming the city and have already ransacked the city’s upscale shopping district on Canal Street. They have been seen on news reports carrying huge bags of stolen goods. Governor Kathleen Blanco announced plans to completely shut down New Orleans and move everybody left there out of the area. A rescue helicopter was shot at, temporarily halting all rescue operations.

Former mayor Marc Morial summed up his view by saying; “We’ve lost our city, I fear it’s potentially like Pompeii.”

Two of the city’s levees on Lake Ponchartrain failed; one with a football-field size breach.Emergency workers dropped sandbags from helicopters into the levee’s breaches, but the water kept coming.

“It appears that now the bowl is beginning to fill — not rapidly but slowly,” said Walter Maestri, an emergency operations manager. New floods swept through the center of New Orleans and water now covers 80 percent of the city with broken gas lines feeding raging fires. In some locations the water is now at a depth of 20 feet (six meters).

The famous French Quarter, initially less affected by flooding, finally also succumbed.

“Get out of town if you can.” said Ed Freytag, a city worker at the temporary City Hall complex. “We’re damn close right now to that worst-case scenario,” said Dave Cohen, a local radio host.

For those that were staying in the Superdome, officials have begun moving them to the long-vacant Astrodome in Houston, Texas.
