Earlier this month, Wikinews spoke with University of Sussex professor of economics L. Alan Winters regarding the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union (EU) in the 2016 Brexit referendum and the subsequent negotiations leading up to and following the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement of December, which he has researched extensively. In a call, a Wikinews correspondent spoke with Professor Winters about recent developments in UK trade policy to learn more about his observations.

Winters is professor of economics at the University of Sussex, as well as founding director and fellow of the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO). His career spans over 15 years, including as chief economist at the Department for International Development, director of the Development Research Group of the World Bank, CEO of the Migrating Out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium and advisor for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the World Trade Organization and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Three reports where Winters is listed as an author were used as reference during the interview: “COVID-19 will reinforce the Brexit shock”, “The Costs of Brexit” and “Taking stock of the new UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement: governance, state subsidies and the level playing field”.

Winters was awarded the title “Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath”, styled C.B., on June 16, 2012 as part of the 2012 Birthday Honours.

For the younger set a sore throat often means a day off from school, a television tuned to the Cartoon Network, and an extra bowl of ice cream. It almost makes the suffering seem worthwhile. Grown-ups, of course, don t have the time for such pampering. We go about our daily business, thinking we can tough out the rawness, burning, and scratchiness that make it painful to talk, much less swallow food. But by day s end, the sore throat has left us virtually speechless. We do tend to think that sore throat as kid stuff. But the fact is that every year about 40 million adults come down with one. Usually it is a symptom of a viral or bacterial infection. But it can also be instigated by irritants such as stomach acid, tobacco smoke, smog, dry heat, dust, pollen, and other allergens. Overuse is also a factor. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to relieve your soreness.

1.

Address Any Allergies

Common allergies can cause postnasal drip, which irritates the throat. A throat that is itchy, not just painful, points to an allergic condition. If you have an allergy, an over-the-counter antihistamine may help relieve your symptoms. Antihistamine can have a drying effect, so be sure to increase your fluid intake while you are on the medication. They can also make you drowsy.

2.

Line Up A Lozenge

Not all throat lozenges are created equal. The best ones contain glycerine. It keeps the throat tissue well-hydrated. You may find these lozenges at health food stores or specialty drugstores. It is also recommended avoiding lozenges that contain either mint or menthol. Both ingredients tend to be drying and are bad for the larynx.

3.

Treat Your Beak

A stuffed-up nose can force you to breathe through your mouth, which irritates your throat. So taking an over-the-counter decongestant may help ease your sore throat as well.

4.

Get Steamed

You can also keep your throat tissue moist with the help of steam. It is recommended that you run hot water in your kitchen or bathroom sink, then drape a towel over your head to trap the steam and inhale. Or you could just turn up the hot water in the shower to create a steam bath.

5.

Have Some Tea, Honey

Tea with honey is a traditional sore throat remedy. You can boost its therapeutic benefits with this spicy twist. Stir into your tea 1 tablespoon of honey and the juice of half a lemon, then add ground red pepper to taste. The pepper probably has a mild anesthetic effect. It also stimulates the immune system.

6.

Turn Down The Volume

If you must talk, then refrain from using your voice in an unnatural way. Do not try to talk over the loud noises. And do not try to project your voice at a pitch that is out of your range.

7.

Think Twice About Gargling

Gargling can actually aggravate and prolongs a sore throat. Doing it once or twice with salt water might make you feel better by increasing blood flow to the throat area. But doing it regularly, especially mouthwash, can be very irritating. If you opt for an occasional saltwater rinse, then it is recommended to have a solution of teaspoon of salt in cup of water. Just be sure to only rinse with, not swallow, the salt water.

Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life
August 6, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Understanding Home Loans: Limitations and Benefits

by

vijay_Korappa_Shetty

Everybody has an idea of a dream home, their little piece of heaven on this earth. However, to get that, a large sum of money must be secured. However, let this not blow away your dreams because with home loans, you can now make better financial decisions and at the same time get started with the construction of your dream home. It is important to understand how these work and how to make proper repayment to secure the loan.

Nowadays, numerous financial institutions are offering home loans. In fact, it is a lot easier now to make such a loan. Before applying to any bank for a loan, you have to be aware of several factors connected to property as well as the features of the home loan. You might want to acquaint yourself of the various terminologies related to this particular kind of loan. It is advised that you consider the help of a consultant or loan experts before considering any actions.

Let us understand the different kinds of home loans and how they vary from each other:

If you are planning to sell your current house and buy a new one, bridge loans are very helpful in financing the new home while the house is still up for sale in the real estate market. The land purchase loans are for those who wish to buy land or for the purpose of investment of construction. If you simply want to buy a new home, the home purchase loan is the basic option that you might want to look into. There are also loans dedicated to miscellaneous items such as repair works, renovations and fixes. You can also ask a bank to finance home additions for a new room. If you already have a land and you wish to construct a new house, asking for a home construction loan will be your best option.

Any working individual considers having their own home. A dwelling, for all its worth, is a basic need. However, it is difficult for a regular middle class person to own a house in a snap. Aside from that, paying in cash sometimes is not the most practicable idea since we also have existing utilities to pay for and emergencies to be prepared about. The home loan is fantastic if you know the limitations of what you can borrow.

Getting a home loan is very easy now and in the recent years, some banks are altering their interest rates in order to cater to more people who wish to borrow money to create their dream houses. Of course, at the end of the day, you have to make sure that the loans are paid on time. This is necessary so that you can be considered for better repayment methods. Some methods include automatic draft benefits that ensure you will not have a late payment while there is money on your account. Some companies even apply rate reductions if you choose this method. Another option is biweekly payments. Some people pay their mortgages once a month and that translates to 12 months. If you pay biweekly, you can pay up to 26 weeks, meaning 13 months. This can help you in drastically minimizing the loans.

It is advised that you check with a consultant about your loan plans and your future mortgage repayment options in order to determine the feasibility of your home getting paid for on time.

Influential rock drummer Ginger Baker dies at age 80

Influential rock drummer Ginger Baker dies at age 80
August 5, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Monday, October 7, 2019

Yesterday morning, English drummer Ginger Baker died in a hospital at the age of 80. The news came from the Twitter account in his name and was independently confirmed by Associated Press with his daughter Nettie Baker. On September 25, it was reported Baker was hospitalized in critical condition. Baker was widely known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band Cream, an early supergroup.

Baker, a life-long smoker and former heroin addict, suffered from health problems for years. The list of ailments included hearing loss, osteoarthritis, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as heart problems for which he had surgery in 2016. Although known to have lived his latter years in South Africa, his daughter said he died in Britain without elaborating.

Ginger Baker was born Peter Edward Baker in Lewisham, London, in 1939. His father was killed in combat in 1943 during World War II. Baker — who was reportedly nicknamed Ginger due to his red hair — began playing drums in his teens. In a story he sometimes told, he had a habit of tapping on school desks. When an opportunity arose at a party, his classmates encouraged him to sit down at a drum set. “I’d never sat behind a kit before, but I sat down — and I could play! One of the musicians turned round and said, ‘Bloody hell, we’ve got a drummer’, and I thought, ‘Bloody hell, I’m a drummer’?”, he recalled in a 2009 retelling of the story to the The Independent.

Baker began his career as a drummer in jazz bands. He played with Acker Bilk and Terry Lightfoot. In 1962, when fellow drummer Charlie Watts was leaving Blues Incorporated for The Rolling Stones, Watts recommended Baker to be his replacement. Later, Baker found early success with rhythm and blues band The Graham Bond Organisation where he met bassist Jack Bruce.

In 1966, Baker, Bruce and singer/guitarist Eric Clapton, who was known from The Yardbirds, formed Cream. The rock trio was a massive success, selling tens of millions of records, including the first ever platinum certified album Wheels of Fire. Cream recorded four albums, then in 1968 disbanded with Baker and Bruce having developed a volatile relationship. Clapton and Baker were subsequently in another supergroup Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. Blind Faith recorded only one studio album but notably played before a crowd of a hundred thousand at a free concert in London’s Hyde Park.

In the 1970s, Baker moved to Nigeria where he established a studio and began playing polo. Here he collaborated with Fela Kuti and worked on Wings’s album Band on the Run with Paul McCartney of The Beatles fame. Later, he recorded with John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd.

Cream was inducted in 1993 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band reunited in 2005 for several London and New York concerts. Afterwards he moved to South Africa, and still lived there when the 2012 documentary Beware of Mr. Baker was filmed. Baker’s last recording was 2014’s Why? solo album. Baker retired from live performances in 2016 due to his ill health.

Paul McCartney wrote on Twitter, “Ginger Baker, great drummer, wild and lovely guy. We worked together on the ‘Band on the Run’ album in his ARC Studio, Lagos, Nigeria. Sad to hear that he died but the memories never will.”

“A very sad loss, and my condolences to his family and friends. A loss also for his contribution to music. He was well-grounded in jazz from very early on,” wrote Steve Winwood in a statement. “Beneath his somewhat abrasive exterior, there was a very sensitive human being with a heart of gold. He’ll be missed.”

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones also reacted on Twitter, “Sad news hearing that Ginger Baker has died, I remember playing with him very early on in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. He was a fiery but extremely talented and innovative drummer.”

Nokia takes over Symbian OS development

Nokia takes over Symbian OS development
August 3, 2021 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

On Monday, Symbian Foundation discontinued Symbian OS, as a result of its lost popularity since Android came to market. The Finnish telecommunications company Nokia, being one of the few hardware manufacturers who use the system on some of the models, announced that it has taken over the operating system’s development.

Nokia had acquired Symbian Foundation in 2008. Now, the foundation refused to continue the project, because this smartphone operating system had lost its popularity when Android came to market.During the next several months, most Symbian Foundation employees, who were completely governing the project previously, will retire.By April 2011, only the licensing team will stay to oversee the project.

The executive director of the Symbian Foundation Tim Holbrow explained the change, saying that “There has since been a seismic change in the mobile market but also more generally in the economy, which has led to a change in focus for some of our funding board members. The result of this is that the current governance structure for the Symbian platform — the foundation — is no longer appropriate.”

Instead, Nokia takes over the development of the system. This is possible because the Symbian OS is currently open source and freely redistributable. In an interview with ZDNet, the head of Nokia smartphone business Jo Harlow said that the takeover was in significant part because Nokia hardware was the major one using the OS. The development environment would be switched to Qt framework for the system to support cross-platform applications use and development. It is unclear whether the licensing of the future releases of the system would remain open-source.

What You Need To Know About Managed Wan Optimization

August 3, 2021 · Website Design And Development · (No comments)

byadmin

If you aren’t a tech guru then a lot of the new terms that described offered services can be confusing. This is definitely true with things such as managed WAN optimization that may seem completely foreign to most business owners and managers.

In fact, most companies and businesses can actually benefit from managed WAN optimization if they just take a minute to understand what it means and how it can be used to help your business internet connection be that much faster and more efficient.

What It Is

The idea behind managed WAN optimization is that a third party will actually work to host or provide an internet connection that is fast, efficient and doesn’t have all the lags and slowdowns that are common with an in-house managed system. You can take full advantage of years of experience of the WAN optimization service to work within your particular network and system.

There is no need for any installs or complicated procedures and all users on your system will experience no difference in their typical use of the system, other than they won’t have the time delays, hangs and slow loading pages to deal with.

Bandwidth Solutions

With any company a concern about bandwidth use is going to be an ongoing issue. By using a managed WAN optimization that utilizes caching and bonding this is not an issue. Caching ensures that the page will load from cache rather than the internet, optimizing bandwidth use.

Bonding, or combining the services by several different internet sources, is also possible through managed WAN optimization. This allows you to actually have a cumulative effect of the different internet sources rather than just using each independently. This can allow businesses to take advantage of price differences with different internet service providers to come up with a faster, better and more reliable system than could be obtained using any or all services independently.

If you are facing major changes or upgrades to your current internet systems you should consider the option of managed WAN optimization. This third party service can not only help to boost your current system’s efficiency but it can also help it to become more functionally effective at just a fraction of the cost of a full system upgrade.

If you are facing major changes or upgrades to your current internet systems.

California jury orders Skilled Healthcare to pay $671 million in damages

California jury orders Skilled Healthcare to pay $671 million in damages

A California jury in a Humboldt County courthouse ordered nursing home operator Skilled Healthcare (SH) to pay $671 million (about €531 million) in a class action lawsuit from patients of SH’s 22 California facilities and their families. The jury found that SH failed to properly staff its facilities to comply with California state law.

The jury has not heard the case for punitive damages; however, it awarded the plaintiffs $613 million (about €484 million) in statutory damages. The remaining $58 million (about €46 million) was in restitution.

After the verdict was issued, Skilled Healthcare stocks plunged over 75% to a record low.

An official statement from SH says it “strongly disagrees” with the jury’s verdict. SH plans on filing an appeal to the decision. The company could possibly face bankruptcy because of this verdict.

One of the lawyers for the nearly 32,000 plaintiffs, Timothy Needham, claimed that inadequate staffing levels put SH’s patients at risk. He said, “The company knows that this lack of staffing causes a higher risk of problems for patients. Call lights don’t get answered, persons don’t get proper hygiene, persons don’t get their medications on time or the care they need.”

This lawsuit does not apply to SH’s facilities in Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.
