The British celebrity chef John Burton Race has been charged with the offence of drink-driving.

The chef, who is famous for starring in such programmes as French Leave and Return of the Chef, was pulled over by police on the A379 road in the county of Devon, England. The location was near to his restaurant entitled, “The New Angel”. It was a routine check that took place in the early hours of Friday morning. After a breathalyser test, the chef was arrested for drink-driving. Another offence that he is being charged with is “resisting or obstructing a constable”, which means to resist arrest.

A Devon and Cornwall Constabulary spokeswoman released a statement to Sky News which said: “John Burton Race, 52, was arrested on October 30 at about 1am. He has been charged with driving or attempting to drive with excess alcohol and resisting or obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.”

John has now been released on an unconditional bail. He is expected to appear before magistrates in a courtroom in Newton Abbot on November 17, 2009.

An outdoor business means you will need some kind of outdoor shade for those extreme weather days. After all, you do not want your customers to be turned away from your place simply because it is wet or too hot, do you?

This is where the commercial patio umbrella comes in. The main difference between the commercial version and the normal one is that the commercial ones are usually larger and hardier. And indeed, they have to be because they have to last a lot longer in order to be cost-effective. Since they will be used almost continuously, they will have to withstand arduous wear and tear, especially during harsh weather conditions. The continuous strong sun coupled with the wet rain and dampness of dew will definitely wear out the umbrella. However, the longer you do not have to do any replacement on the umbrella, the better.

The commercial patio umbrella comes in a few types:

– Wooden. Usually preferred by beach resorts and places of business with a rustic theme, these are freestanding and heavy items that are often beautiful by design. They are pretty expensive, though, which makes them all the more appealing as a classy piece of outdoor dcor.

– Aluminum. More lightweight than wooden ones, these can be more common than wooden ones as they fit any dcor theme and are usually cheaper than their wood counterparts. They are also lighter which means they can be more easily moved about.

– Stainless steel. These well-liked as they are rust-proof and often beautiful to touch and look at. However, they are better off in their original form and unpainted.

– Plastic. About the same cost as aluminum ones, plastic patio umbrellas are usually used in more private settings or those that are not too exposed to harsh weather conditions. This is because plastic is less durable than aluminum in certain ways; their paint, for example, peels away much faster and easily than those on an aluminum base.

– Wrought iron. These are beautiful, ornately decorated umbrella sets. Unfortunately, they are also extremely heavy and thus, usually used in a permanent spot. They are also considerably expensive. However, wrought iron is extremely beautiful and often appreciated for their distinguished classiness.

If you are looking for something unique yet practical, it would be a good idea to explore the different shapes the commercial patio umbrella comes in. You will be amazed at how an outdoor umbrella in a different shape can really change about how a space looks like. Some shapes, however, have the equal balance of aesthetics and practicality while others are for purely aesthetic purposes. It is, therefore, pretty important that you weight each option carefully before purchase.

There are a few basic options available in the market:

– The square umbrella is, by far, the most popular. This is simply because by its very shape, it provides ample shelter and can fit most spaces quite easily. Most spaces are pretty squarish in shape, so having an umbrella in a similar design will fit in nicely.

– The rectangle umbrella is a little less common. Slightly elongated on its sides, it is a good shade choice for longer dining tables or for groups of little tables strung together.

– The round umbrella is ideal for smaller clusters of guests. As round tables are often more casual, this type of shade is perfect for beach resorts, sports complexes and pool sides.

– The triangle umbrella is another unique sight. Often, this is chosen more for its looks and uniqueness than anything else, as it can be difficult to position this one. It is not often that you would find a commercial patio umbrella in this shape.

– The octagonal umbrella is growing in popularity simply because its shape allows for more shade beneath. Due to its eight sides, it is usually larger in size, making it conducive for commercial spaces.

– The hexagonal umbrella, like its octagonal counterpart, is just as practical sometimes. It covers a smaller area than its eight-sided cousin but is able to provide more shade than a square or rectangle umbrella.

Commercial spaces require more innovative and decorative ways of providing shade. Balancing practicality with aesthetics can be quite tricky at times so knowing all your options from the beginning is a smart move. While there are many types of commercial patio umbrellas for you, not all will be what you need.

Australian unemployment at lowest level in 30 years
February 24, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Friday, June 9, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced Australia’s unemployment rate for May 2006 on Thursday. The rate had dropped to 4.9 percent, the first time since 1976 that unemployment in Australia had been below five percent.

Mr Howard said 56,000 full time jobs were created in May with 38,000 of those taken up by women. He said it was a symbol of how well his government was managing the economy. “The result is a wonderful symbol of the success of the Government’s economic policies.” said Mr Howard.

According to the government 1.8 million jobs have been created since it took office in March 1996.

The number of people actively seeking work also increased, a sign Mr Howard said that people are “confident of finding work.”

At an interview in Sydney, Mr Howard told reporters that he believed the unemployment rate would be driven down further when the benefits of his Workchoices industrial relations reforms begin to show. “I believe, as some of the effects of the workplace relations changes work their way through, then the unemployment rate, particularly in small business, will go down even further,” he said.

Mr Howard denied that Workchoices had any affect on the figures for May saying that it was too early to tell. “I am not going to make that claim. It’s only May’s figures and the changes only came in March. I think it is too early to make that claim” Mr Howard told reporters.

Following the announcement, Liberal MP Wilson Tuckey said that the rise in the number of jobs could not have happened without the government’s industrial relations reforms. “We wouldn’t have achieved these outcomes, particularly in employer hiring, without the changes we’ve made,”

“When employers have confidence in their hiring arrangements as the Workchoices gives them, they’re going to go out and hire more people” said Mr Tuckey.

Stephen Smith, workplace spokesperson for the opposition attacked Mr Tuckey’s claims, stating that all the government’s new industrial relations legislation has achieved is reduced wages. “The suggestion that somehow we’ve got these employment and unemployment figures as a result of 30 days of John Howard slashing wages is a complete nonsense,” he said.

“It’s great that we’ve got a 30-year low in unemployment but that’s a result of 15 years of continuous economic growth and a resources boom.” said Mr Smith.

Pope speaks with astronauts in orbit for first time
February 23, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Sunday, May 22, 2011

Pope Benedict XVI spoke with astronauts aboard the International Space Station yesterday, marking the first time a pope has conversed with astronauts in orbit.

Organized by the European Space Agency (ESA), the call originated from the Vatican Library at 7:11 am Eastern time. German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter, president of the Italian Space Agency Enrico Saggese, and General Giuseppe Bernardis of the Italian Air Force were also in the room at the Vatican. Aboard the spacecraft were Italian, U.S., and Russian crew members of the Endeavour STS-134 mission and Expedition 27.

Endeavour commander and U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly greeted His Holiness aboard the spacecraft. The Pope wished Kelly’s wife, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, well as she recovers from an assassination attempt that took place in January. Doctors inserted a hard plastic implant, or a bone flap, into Giffords’s skull last Wednesday. The Pope also asked of the astronauts’ impressions of the planet from space.

“We fly over most of the world and we don’t see borders, but at the same time we realize that people fight with each other and there is a lot of violence in this world,” Kelly said. The Pope sent his condolences to Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, whose mother died earlier this month while he was in space.

Bulgarian Property Can The Profits Continue?

February 19, 2022 · Quantity Surveyors · (No comments)

Submitted by: K Damian Qualter BA MBA

Why Bulgarian Residential Property increased

The increase in residential Bulgarian property prices in the recent months has brought a disgusting amount of media coverage of the market these days. You can actually read articles about their property investment in almost all daily and weekly newspapers and magazines. Real estate has become an attractive topic even to government officials, whose public statements have caused even more increased hustle around residential real estate prices.

The Bulgarian property investment market is just another free, unregulated market, where the mechanisms of supply and demand command the movement of prices up- or down. At the same time, their unique property investment market has some specific characteristics all its own, which make it an extremely unique market. Some of these characteristics include: their lack of sufficient information; a reaction lag when it is compared to the other sectors of the economy; non-standard product; lack of a mobility of properties, in addition to, buyers and sellers; and a limited number of transactions that are available in one person s lifetime.

What this means is that the smooth mechanisms of their free market economy would be influenced by all of these factors and should be seriously considered when you are analysing the property market for your investment. Any economics student these days would tell you that prices rise when either supply shrinks or the demand for something increases. What has happened on the Bulgarian real estate market this year in particular is that both supply and demand have grown significantly with demand outweighing supply and therefore leading to higher sales prices.

What is more interesting than this is what has actually caused this demand to grow at such a pace in the first place. The size of the population, their combined disposable income, availability of mortgage credits and government actions can influence demand for residential properties is directly responsible for this.

The population of Bulgaria has been decreasing slowly in recent years, but at the same time the poor economic conditions in the countryside have forced many Bulgarians to move to the bigger cities for in search of cheaper establishments. This has led to an increase in the number of potential buyers of real estate in Sofia and the bigger cities. Thanks to this the real estate market has been its most active in these markets and is expected to continue to be in the short and semi-long term.

The number of people is not a sufficient reason in itself for the increased demand for properties; the disposable income of households is an extremely important factor as well. The steady economic growth of the Bulgarian economy over the past few years has allowed some portions of Bulgarian society to be able to earn and save more money.

Disposable income of Bulgarians is even more enhanced by the availability of mortgage loans where there wasn t any before. Although interest rates are still high at 8.5 to 12.5 per cent a year, many Bulgarians have taken this opportunity to be able to enjoy a new home now rather than wait for the right amount of money to be accumulated in 10 to 15 years. The increased competition between all of the commercial banks will cause even more interest rate drops and stimulate the demand for residential properties in the future.

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich
February 19, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Saturday, August 2, 2008

A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.

The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.

In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.

Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:

The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours.

Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.

Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.

The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.
