Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

One of the most common treatments in today’s society is Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Vancouver WA. In fact, most people go through at least one extraction in their lifetime. Although most do not intrinsically involve postoperative complications, pulling a wisdom tooth does show some incidence of complications due to the anatomy of the area. The fundamental success of any type of treatment is a consultation where the dentist will perform a complete oral and dental examination along with radiographic studies.

The complications of a tooth extraction hours after treatment, after this period of time, the inflammation should subside. If it doesn’t, it could be another complication of an infectious nature.

In dental extractions requiring surgery, it is recommended during the hours following the treatment to take precautions such as no heavy exercise, avoiding sudden changes in pressure, etc. Not adhering to the dentist’s instructions can leave you with swelling, discoloration, pain, discomfort, and / or bruising. It is very likely to develop these problems after a Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Vancouver WA no matter the degree of surgical intervention.

Inflammation caused by an extraction is very normal and usually reaches its peak between 48 and 72 hours after surgery. After that time, inflammation and swelling become self-limiting. Following the possible complications that can occur is bleeding. Everyone bleeds after an operation, but this must be completely stopped within six hours after surgery. If the bleeding persists, you have to go back to the dentist or surgeon. You can help stop bleeding by pressing gauze into the extraction area, either biting it or using your hand. Under no circumstances should your fingers touch the wound.

There are isolated cases in which the jaw is temporarily blocked and a patient can have feeling of stiffness. Along with this is the difficulty of performing common tasks like eating food and talking and / or brushing actions. Visit Lewis Family Dentistry or their Facebook page for more information.

Last Tuesday early morning, a sea lion walked from the beach into Pantai Inn in La Jolla, California. The animal was rescued by local animal rescue authorities. Wikinews took an interview from Shane Pappas, a General Manager of the inn.

((Wikinews)) At what time of day did the sea lion enter the Inn?

Shane Pappas: Surveillance footage shows that our sea lion friend made her way onto our property at approximately 5:45am on Tuesday morning. She waddled through our courtyard and climbed up onto one of our lounge chairs.

((WN)) How long did he stay in the Inn before he was moved out of the building?

Shane Pappas: The sea lion was not seen by our staff until about 6:30am. At that point my front desk agent Veronica made frantic calls to the authorities to find someone to come rescue the sea lion. By the time we got a hold of Sea World they were able to come and rescue her at around 9:45am. All told the sea lion was here for about four hours.

((WN)) What do you think attracted the animal? Was it the radio sound? Was it heard as far as the beach?

Shane Pappas: We’re not sure what attracted the sea lion. We like to think that it was the beauty and relaxation of our courtyard. In regards to the radio sound I’m not sure what you are referring to.

((WN)) Who and how transported the animal out of the building?

Shane Pappas: A gentleman named Bill who is a rescue worker with Sea World came out to rescue the pup. He asked if I would assist in the rescue which I was more than happy to do. It’s not every day that you get to rescue a sea lion.

((WN)) Where was the animal transported to?

Shane Pappas: The sea lion was loaded into a crate on a truck and transported back to Sea World. She will be kept there for six weeks so that she can be nursed back to health and returned to the wild.

US financier Madoff to remain free on bail
June 27, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

A federal court in New York, New York ruled Monday that American financier Bernard Madoff can remain free on a US$10 million bond. Madoff faces charges of securities fraud in case that may reveal losses as large as US$50 billion. He was originally arrested on December 11, 2008.

Federal prosecutors had argued that Madoff had violated terms of his bail by mailing valuables to relatives from his Manhattan apartment, where he is under house arrest.

Judge Ronald L. Ellis ruled that, “The government fails to provide sufficient evidence that any potential future dissemination of Madoff’s assets would rise to the level of an economic harm.”

The judge, however, did say that “it is appropriate that his ability to transfer property be restricted as completely as possible.” Madoff will be required to submit a complete inventory of items in his apartment.

A Wall Street adviser, Madoff was arrested and charged by the FBI last December with a single count of securities fraud, also known as stock fraud and investment fraud. He allegedly told senior employees of his firm on December 10, that his business “is all just one big lie” and that it was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme [since at least 2005].”

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Health Insurance For Individuals

June 23, 2022 · Insurance · (No comments)

No denying that the cost of healthcare, which has been a basic need of our every life, is rising in the US like anything. Have a quick look to the facts which likely to be more than incredible, worrisome, and scary for anyone. Surgery of a broken leg tends to cost nearly $7,500 – $10,000 The cost of 3 days of hospital stay will cost you $30,000 Critical cancer care is likely to cost more than hundreds of thousands of dollars. To be precise, the largest part of Americans can hardly afford such huge expenses simply because illness or injury strikes us all of a sudden without giving us any prior intimation and can simply jeopardize our happy family life. Here comes the essentiality of having health insurance for individuals in Texas. How Does it work?Typically, the way health insurance works are that you buy a health insurance policy that requires you paying a certain amount of premium depending on the value of the policy you buy. Paying this minimum premium enables you to get through almost all kinds of costly healthcare services without spending anything or on a sharing basis as per the policy terms. If it feels you wondering that how do they bear those massive expenses against you minimal premium amount, this is reasonable to understand that compared to the number of sick people, the percent of healthy people is more. Thus, a large amount of premium collected from the enrollees can be utilized to support the small number of sick or injured people.Where Will You Receive Care?Establishments that offer health insurance for individuals in Texas are geared up with an extensive network of providers including recognized healthcare facilities, laboratories, pharmacies and obviously hundreds of thousands of physicians and specialist doctors. Insurance companies work together with a specific network of healthcare providers who agree to provide services to the members or enrollees in a budget-friendly way with the support of insurers. Thereby it is vital for you to ensure whether or not the hospital or physician is within the network. If the provider is not under the network, the insurance company may not entertain you for the service provided or likely to pay only a small portion of your expenses. So, naturally, under such circumstances, you have to pay much higher than having a service from someone who is under the network (get internet help to ensure). What Does the Healthcare Plan Cover?Subsequent to the standardization of healthcare plan benefits and with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, these days health insurance for individuals in Texas are required to offer you ‘essential healthcare benefits’ without having a variation among plans. According to the standardization, you can now expect to enjoy services as stated below:• Emergency services• Hospitalization• Maternity and newborn care• Laboratory tests• Mental healthcare/ substance-abuse rehabilitation• Outpatient care service (this you can avail from physicians in their personal clinic, outside of a hospice.• Pediatric care included with dental and vision care• Preventive services (immunizations and management of critical diseases)• Prescription drugs• Rehabilitation servicesHow Much Will It Cost?In reality, understanding the coverage cost by the insurance company is a bit complex. In a nutshell, apart from paying an enrollment and yearly premium, you have to share some portion of the total expense as a payout of your pocket. Because all healthcare costs are paid according to the standard rule of deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance. Finally, it is worth noting that as a thumb rule, the more premium you pay, the less you’ll have to pay out as and when you access healthcare services.

Study: Socialized Canadian surgery half the U.S. cost with same results

Americans pay twice as much for heart-bypass surgery as the socialized Canadian system, with no difference in outcome, according to today’s issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine in a study funded by American drug company, Pfizer Inc.. The research found that heart bypass surgery costs an average of $10,373 in Canada, compared with $20,673 in the United States. Even though the costs were double in the United States, the rate of complications and death following bypass surgery was similar.

High administrative costs and overtreatment are usually blamed for the higher cost in the profit-driven U.S. system. Americans spent $5,635 per capita on health care in 2003, while only $3,003 was spent by Canadians. Health spending accounts for almost 15 per cent of gross domestic product in the U.S. and just under 10 per cent in Canada; while at the same time, all Canadian residents are full covered. In addition, the average Canadian lives 2 years longer than the average American.

This is one of the first studies directly comparing the costs of surgery in Canada and the United States and it reinforces the view of Dr. Mark Eisenberg, head of cardiovascular epidemiology at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal; “The conventional wisdom is that health care is much more expensive in the U.S. and the conventional wisdom is right.” by finding that Canada’s socialized system is far more cost efficient than the U.S. model.

The cost of medications used to treat bypass patients were as much as 68 percent greater in the U.S. than in Canada and the cost of a surgical bed was 36 percent greater in the U.S.. In Canada, nursing accounted for 44 percent of the treatment costs, compared with 21 percent in the U.S. and patients stayed longer in hospital following surgery in Canada.

Jerry Brown defeats Meg Whitman in election for California governorship

Jerry Brown defeats Meg Whitman in election for California governorship

Thursday, November 4, 2010

On Tuesday night, twenty-seven years after previously completing his second term as governor of California, candidate Jerry Brown has again won the race for the position.

Attorney General Jerry Brown, of San Francisco, California, was the lead nominee for the Democratic Party, facing off against the lead nominee of the Republican Party Meg Whitman, of Long Island, New York, who had spent a record US$141 million to support her campaign. More than approximately $80 million of that was diverted to knocking out California Insurance Commissioner and also Republican candidate Steve Poizner, of Houston, Texas, who was also running in the election but was defeated early in the campaign.

The election ended with only 42.2% popular support for Meg Whitman as contrasted with 52.8% of votes for Jerry Brown. A major issue that arose during the elections was the bad economy, something that many people cited as the reason for their votes. Some mudslinging, including an incident when an unidentified Brown supporter was found to have called Whitman a “whore”, also ensued a few days before the night of the election took place in the Fox theater, according to Cnet.

When the night of the election came and the new governor of California announced, the former Jesuit seminary student gave his five-minute victory speech, showing optimism for the future of California and the state budget:

“I see California once again leading in renewable energy, in public education and openness to every kind of person, whatever their color is,” Brown said. “I mean, we’re all God’s children.”
