A 14-year-old boy has been killed in an accident involving a quad bike in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The boy has been identified as Paddy McErlean, who crashed near his house in the town of Maghera.

What is believed to have happened is that Paddy was travelling on an all-terrain vehicle with a 16-year-old boy along a rural road at around 2200 GMT on Thursday when the vehicle smashed into a post, the boys were then thrown from the road. The 16-year-old boy is critically injured and as of yet has not been identified.

Ann Scott, who is the head teacher in St. Patrick’s College, which is the high school that Paddy attended, said: “This tragic accident really has brought a profound sense of loss to the school. The loss of Paddy, who was only 14, has just shocked everybody at the college. He really contributed a lot to the school, he was full of life, he was such a lovely young lad, very popular with the staff and pupils and we will really miss him so terribly.”

Two-and-a-half tonnes of marijuana destroyed in Afghan school
August 22, 2018 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Sunday, December 21, 2008

The combined efforts of agents from the Afghan Commandos and Coalition forces have led to the discovery and destruction of two-and-a-half tonnes of marijuana in an abandoned school in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Friday.

Kandah?r province or Qandahar (??????,{??????) is one of the largest of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. It is located in southern Afghanistan, between Helamand, Oruzgan and Zabul provinces. Its capital is the city of Kandah?r, also spelled Qandah?r, (?????? or ??????), the second largest city in Afghanistan, with a population of 450,300 (2006 estimate). Kandahar City is located on the Arghandab River. The province has a population of nearly 890,000, with more than 300,000 living in its capital city. The main inhabitants of Kandahar province are the Pashtun people.

An improvised explosive device and an unexploded mortar round, both 100-meters away from the school, also were destroyed.Foot patrol by the combined forces yielded tips which led to the drug discovery. A Commando also discovered a large room filled with marijuana seeds. The marijuana was placed in two-foot-tall (0.6-meter) stacks that filled multiple 12ft-by-12ft rooms. Rust on the furniture suggests the Afghan schoolhouse may not have been used as such for a long period of time. No students or faculty were around at the time of the drug bust.

U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson, Col. Jerry O’Hara said that “using drugs to fund insurgent activity is bad enough; using a school as a drug warehouse is an attack on the future of all Afghanistan.”

Xinhua has reported that “according to a recent U.N. report, Afghanistan produces over 90 percent of the world’s opium as Taliban militants will benefit nearly 500 million U.S. dollars from opium trade in 2008.”

Meanwhile, coalition troops have killed four militants in Zabul Province. They also detained five suspects on Saturday. Adm. Mike Mullen, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that “the United States would send between 20,000 and 30,000 more forces to Afghanistan by summer.” “Those forces will primarily move into the country’s south, where the insurgency is the most entrenched,” he added.

Camel Rock Festival held in Scilly
August 21, 2018 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Wednesday, September 14, 2005

The August Bank Holiday weekend, as usual, played host to many festivals and musical events around the UK, not least the Camel Rock Festival held at Porthcressa on the Isles of Scilly. But will it be the last?

Local bands included those formed at the Five Islands’ School, the members of the Steamband under the temporary name Senile Shambles and the rhythm and blues band, Roadrunner. Bands imported from mainland England included Murdoch, from Manchester.

The event, deemed ‘unique’ in the local press, raises money for local musical projects on the islands. It’s future is, as always, in doubt due to the amount of work for organisers and volunteers, especially for the clean-up operation. Organiser Paul Lewis hopes that the event will return next year as long as there are still volunteers.

Female Hair Loss And Hair Restoration

August 21, 2018 · Cosmetic Surgery · (No comments)

By Samuel Lam

Although men are the most susceptible to hair loss, a large percentage of women also lose hair, a problem that can be just as devastating if not more so to their psyche. An estimate has been given of 30% of women over 30 years of age who lose hair. This is an alarming statistic but one that can be readily solved or at least improved by medicine and/or surgery.

Women lose hair for a variety of reasons: genetic, medical, or environmental causes. It is more important in women than in men in many cases to perform a thorough medical evaluation before contemplating a surgical procedure in order to avoid unnecessary or unsuccessful surgery. For instance, after childbirth women can shed massive amounts of hair due to the release of the estrogen influence on their hair, a condition that corrects itself over several months without need for intervention. However, minoxidil can help accelerate the return of hair growth more quickly in these cases. Other causes of hair loss include tight braiding, as commonly worn by women of African descent. This condition unfortunately is oftentimes irreversible and may mandate surgical hair restoration but nevertheless responds well to surgical intervention.

A thorough medical and physical examination should be part of every initial workup including evaluation of the scalp for signs of abnormal disease that may require a skin biopsy to rule out abnormal disease processes like lupus. In addition, a medical workup for basic laboratory abnormalities should be included in most cases with a study of the iron level, male and female hormones, thyroid levels, basic chemistry values, and possibly sedimentation rate that might indicate an autoimmune disease. Working with a skilled and knowledgeable internist, family doctor, or dermatologist may be a good start in this process.

Minoxidil, or brand-name Rogaine, can also be very important for two reasons. First, it may stabilize or reverse the hair-loss process in many women. Second, because women are susceptible to shedding, albeit temporary, of their hair following a surgical hair transplant it is important to be on minoxidil for a few months to minimize this risk. Even following a surgical hair transplant it would be advisable to continue minoxidil to minimize this possibility.

Surgery can be undertaken to match the type of female hair loss pattern that occurs, typically in one of three patterns. The first pattern is known as male pattern in which women lose hair in the fronto-temporal angles and along the hairline. Although hair restoration would focus to restore this lost hair, the shape of the female hairline is very different from that of their male counterpart in that it is more rounded and closed at the temples. The second pattern has been called a ‘Christmas-tree pattern’ by Elise Olsen in that it appears to be in the aforementioned tree pattern when the woman parts her hair in the midline and gazes downward to the ground. Obviously hair would be focused principally along the frontal area in an area known as the central forelock (the area immediately behind the hairline) where there is the greatest degree of hair loss and can be the most cosmetically sensitive. The third pattern is known as a Ludwig pattern which is more diffuse in nature across the entire center of the scalp and that may extend downward to involve the temples. Hair restoration would be targeted on those areas of deficiency when performing a hair transplant.

Like in the world of economics, the laws of supply and demand govern the success of any hair-transplant endeavor. When a woman has extensive hair loss and only limited donor hair from the back of the head then the results can be less than successful. Conversely, if a woman has more limited loss and more generous, usable donor hair then she can be an excellent candidate. Working with a hair-transplant surgeon who has extensive experience with female pattern baldness is a prerequisite to ensuring or optimizing one’s chances for a successful hair-transplant result. Hopefully, this primer on female hair loss and hair restoration can serve as a basis of understanding for someone who is suffering from this condition and provides hope for a possible solution as well.

Bristol Organic Food Festival 2008 lauched, 100 thousand expected to attend
August 20, 2018 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Saturday, September 6, 2008

The Bristol Organic Food Festival, which is Europe’s largest festival for organic food, launched today in Bristol. Wikinews reported from the event.

The event was opened at 11:00 local time (10:00 UTC) by Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association, who said that the festival was ” the benchmark for what I hope will be the future development of festivals all over the country.”

The event includes a large farmers market, music, and a variety of different features run by 212 organic food and drink related organisations from the region.

Other events that took place today within the festival incuded a BBC run stall promoting organic food, and several stalls which encouraged young children to eat organic food, including a ‘cookery bus,’ which showed children how to cook different foods.

The festival takes place as sales of organic food in the UK are starting to fall. Research has found that organic food sales have fallen by 8.1% over the last year.

The event was launched despite the heavy rain which has occurred throughout the day in Bristol.

“People have got less money, their ordinary food shopping has gone through the roof; they’re cutting out luxuries. And I’m afraid organic is a luxury,” said economic analyst Ben Yearsley. This downturn in the organic food market has meant that some companies, such as WholeFoods Market are planning to close some of their stores. WholeFoods Market are one of the organisations that displayed at the festival.

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Today it is quickly becoming a common energy source for residential, commercial and industrial use.

Propane is used on well over three-quarters of a million farms in the United States to power farm equipment and tools. Regular users of propane are often very dedicated to their energy choice. Israel Journal: Is Yossi Vardi a good father to his entrepreneurial children?
August 17, 2018 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone is currently, courtesy of the Israeli government and friends, visiting Israel. This is a first-hand account of his experiences and may — as a result — not fully comply with Wikinews’ neutrality policy. Please note this is a journalism experiment for Wikinews and put constructive criticism on the collaboration page.

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Dr. Yossi Vardi is known as Israel’s ‘Father of the Entrepreneur’, and he has many children in the form of technology companies he has helped to incubate in Tel Aviv‘s booming Internet sector. At the offices of Superna, one such company, he introduced a whirlwind of presentations from his baby incubators to a group of journalists. What stuck most in my head was when Vardi said, “What is important is not the technology, but the talent.” Perhaps because he repeated this after each young Internet entrepreneur showed us his or her latest creation under Vardi’s tutelage. I had a sense of déjà vu from this mantra. A casual reader of the newspapers during the Dot.com boom will remember a glut of stories that could be called “The Rise of the Failure”; people whose technology companies had collapsed were suddenly hot commodities to start up new companies. This seemingly paradoxical thinking was talked about as new back then; but even Thomas Edison—the Father of Invention—is oft-quoted for saying, “I have not failed. I have just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.”

Vardi’s focus on encouraging his brood of talent regardless of the practicalities stuck out to me because of a recent pair of “dueling studies” The New York Times has printed. These are the sort of studies that confuse parents on how to raise their kids. The first, by Carol Dweck at Stanford University, came to the conclusion that children who are not praised for their efforts, regardless of the outcome’s success, rarely attempt more challenging and complex pursuits. According to Dweck’s study, when a child knows that they will receive praise for being right instead of for tackling difficult problems, even if they fail, they will simply elect to take on easy tasks in which they are assured of finding the solution.

Only one month earlier the Times produced another story for parents to agonize over, this time based on a study from the Brookings Institution, entitled “Are Kids Getting Too Much Praise?” Unlike Dweck’s clinical study, Brookings drew conclusions from statistical data that could be influenced by a variety of factors (since there was no clinical control). The study found American kids are far more confident that they have done well than their Korean counterparts, even when the inverse is true. The Times adds in the words of a Harvard faculty psychologist who intoned, “Self-esteem is based on real accomplishments. It’s all about letting kids shine in a realistic way.” But this is not the first time the self-esteem generation’s proponents have been criticized.

Vardi clearly would find himself encouraged by Dweck’s study, though, based upon how often he seemed to ask us to keep our eyes on the people more than the products. That’s not to say he has not found his latest ICQ, though only time—and consumers—will tell.

For a Web 2.User like myself, I was most fascinated by Fixya, a site that, like Wikipedia, exists on the free work of people with knowledge. Fixya is a tech support site where people who are having problems with equipment ask a question and it is answered by registered “experts.” These experts are the equivalent of Wikipedia’s editors: they are self-ordained purveyors of solutions. But instead of solving a mystery of knowledge a reader has in their head, these experts solve a problem related to something you have bought and do not understand. From baby cribs to cellular phones, over 500,000 products are “supported” on Fixya’s website. The Fixya business model relies upon the good will of its experts to want to help other people through the ever-expanding world of consumer appliances. But it is different from Wikipedia in two important ways. First, Fixya is for-profit. The altruistic exchange of information is somewhat dampened by the knowledge that somebody, somewhere, is profiting from whatever you give. Second, with Wikipedia it is very easy for a person to type in a few sentences about a subject on an article about the Toshiba Satellite laptop, but to answer technical problems a person is experiencing seems like a different realm. But is it? “It’s a beautiful thing. People really want to help other people,” said the presenter, who marveled at the community that has already developed on Fixya. “Another difference from Wikipedia is that we have a premium content version of the site.” Their premium site is where they envision making their money. Customers with a problem will assign a dollar amount based upon how badly they need an answer to a question, and the expert-editors of Fixya will share in the payment for the resolved issue. Like Wikipedia, reputation is paramount to Fixya’s experts. Whereas Wikipedia editors are judged by how they are perceived in the Wiki community, the amount of barnstars they receive and by the value of their contributions, Fixya’s customers rate its experts based upon the usefulness of their advice. The site is currently working on offering extended warranties with some manufacturers, although it was not clear how that would work on a site that functioned on the work of any expert.

Another collaborative effort product presented to us was YouFig, which is software designed to allow a group of people to collaborate on work product. This is not a new idea, although may web-based products have generally fallen flat. The idea is that people who are working on a multi-media project can combine efforts to create a final product. They envision their initial market to be academia, but one could see the product stretching to fields such as law, where large litigation projects with high-level of collaboration on both document creation and media presentation; in business, where software aimed at product development has generally not lived up to its promises; and in the science and engineering fields, where multi-media collaboration is quickly becoming not only the norm, but a necessity.

For the popular consumer market, Superna, whose offices hosted our meeting, demonstrated their cost-saving vision for the Smart Home (SH). Current SH systems require a large, expensive server in order to coordinate all the electronic appliances in today’s air-conditioned, lit and entertainment-saturated house. Such coordinating servers can cost upwards of US$5,000, whereas Superna’s software can turn a US$1,000 hand-held tablet PC into household remote control.

There were a few start-ups where Vardi’s fatherly mentoring seemed more at play than long-term practical business modeling. In the hot market of WiFi products, WeFi is software that will allow groups of users, such as friends, share knowledge about the location of free Internet WiFi access, and also provide codes and keys for certain hot spots, with access provided only to the trusted users within a group. The mock-up that was shown to us had a Google Maps-esque city block that had green points to the known hot spots that are available either for free (such as those owned by good Samaritans who do not secure their WiFi access) or for pay, with access information provided for that location. I saw two long-term problems: first, WiMAX, which is able to provide Internet access to people for miles within its range. There is already discussion all over the Internet as to whether this technology will eventually make WiFi obsolete, negating the need to find “hot spots” for a group of friends. Taiwan is already testing an island-wide WiMAX project. The second problem is if good Samaritans are more easily located, instead of just happened-upon, how many will keep their WiFi access free? It has already become more difficult to find people willing to contribute to free Internet. Even in Tel Aviv, and elsewhere, I have come across several secure wireless users who named their network “Fuck Off” in an in-your-face message to freeloaders.

Another child of Vardi’s that the Brookings Institution might say was over-praised for self-esteem but lacking real accomplishment is AtlasCT, although reportedly Nokia offered to pay US$8.1 million for the software, which they turned down. It is again a map-based software that allows user-generated photographs to be uploaded to personalized street maps that they can share with friends, students, colleagues or whomever else wants to view a person’s slideshow from their vacation to Paris (“Dude, go to the icon over Boulevard Montmartre and you’ll see this girl I thought was hot outside the Hard Rock Cafe!”) Aside from the idea that many people probably have little interest in looking at the photo journey of someone they know (“You can see how I traced the steps of Jesus in the Galilee“), it is also easy to imagine Google coming out with its own freeware that would instantly trump this program. Although one can see an e-classroom in architecture employing such software to allow students to take a walking tour through Rome, its desirability may be limited.

Whether Vardi is a smart parent for his encouragement, or in fact propping up laggards, is something only time will tell him as he attempts to bring these products of his children to market. The look of awe that came across each company’s representative whenever he entered the room provided the answer to the question of Who’s your daddy?

It’s usually very difficult and expensive to get your money back after being ripped off by a fraud home contracting companies. That is why it is very important as homeowners to do your homework before you hire a contractor to help you with your home renovations in Regina and surrounding areas.

The lowest of the low who solicit a few hundred dollars for small home improvement jobs are the common fly-by-night scammers so better find the right and professional general contractors in Regina and renovation contractors in Saskatoon. In finding a right home renovation and restoration contractors in Saskatoon or in Regina, the homeowners must know how to compare companies and to eliminate. For any renovation or home improvement job, property owner should get at least three to four estimates. You may search online or check yellow pages to check for prospect home or roofing contractors in Regina for example, and you might be overwhelmed with so many results and end up having a hard time choosing at least three providers. If that is the case, try to ask around. Word-of-mouth references are best-at least you’ll know one satisfied customer. You may ask your friends, neighbours or co-workers for recommendations and ask them questions on how were the job done and how they feel about it.

Ask for a detailed written estimate

Once youve narrowed your options in to three to four companies, get detailed written estimates from each firm. Ask for an explanation to see if theres a reason for the difference in estimates. Make sure that all contractors price out using the same size, materials to be used and a comparable layout. Finally, don’t make a choice based solely on the lowest bidder. Remember the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is. Once you select a home improvement contractor, make sure they include the estimate as part of your contract.

Contractors who provide a more detailed estimate must also be given prior considerations. This will mean that the company is more experienced and knowledgeable for the subject project. A detailed work estimate will also prevent misunderstanding between you and your selected contractor during the construction process.

Once you have chosen the right contractor for your home construction and improvement project, he will handle the details of, creating a timeline, finding subcontractors, and working to keep you on or under budget. While having a reputable home renovation contractor is important, good communication is paramount.

The process of renovation can be mind bending. Starts with design & planning, looking for contractors, and hiring the best home improvement contractor to do the job. So to lessen the stress, make sure you get the right contractor to help you. Finding the right contractor can help you make your next home project in Saskatoon, Regina and surrounding areas a success.
