Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau
May 29, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England
May 29, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Every woman dreams of being a bride someday. For every little girl, making this dream a reality is perhaps the most meaningful of all. This is the reason why even at a young age, girls already plan their weddings – designs of bridesmaid dresses, wedding gowns and wedding bouquets in Toronto or elsewhere, among others.

Also, bride-to-be’s wish that they would have the perfect, hourglass-y figure should this day happen. Above all, women wish that they will have the 36-24-36 vital statistics. That way, they can get the perfect wedding gown – just what’s needed to make this already-perfect day more memorable.

But that is not always the case. Even then, this should not be reason enough to be wistful. This is, after all, still the most important day of your life. Good thing that today, there are already hundreds of bridal shops and boutiques that specialize in the designing of plus size wedding dresses. Yes ladies, society has opened up and is now welcoming the idea that sexy women need not be skinny. Society has now acknowledged that voluptuous women are also beautiful – and it is because of this notion that that plus size wedding dresses are becoming more and more popular.

If you happen to be one of those women who will need plus size wedding dresses, don’t fret. There are several choices for you out there. Surely, you will never run out of bridal boutiques that will carry this line.

So why exactly are plus size wedding dresses becoming more and more popular? Well…

First, it is because of the preference of men. Women, on a large part, want to be desired by men. Interestingly, statistics suggest that 80% of men prefer voluptuous women. They do not like the skinny, anorexic-looking supermodels who have been donning the catwalks and filling the pages of every glossy magazine there is.

As such, it is no wonder that more and more women are looking for plus size wedding dresses – a size 14 is said to be the average size for a 5’4″ American woman. Of course, you know that a size 14 is plus size. Interestingly enough, a size 14 is said to be sex icon Marilyn Monroe’s size. Now, isn’t that reason enough to be thankful that you’ll be browsing for plus size wedding dresses?

Second, plus size wedding dresses – and any other dress for that matter – is about confidence. It is not an easy thing to carry a plus size dress. Therefore, those who are able to do this are certainly not anyone’s ordinary girl. Those who are able to carry plus size wedding dresses are those who are confident about themselves. It takes grace and poise to carry oversized dresses despite one’s bulk.

That being said, it is clear then that if you are on your way to shopping for plus size wedding dresses, then you are one hell of a voluptuous and confident woman. This is something to be proud of. Consequently, this is the essence and the beauty of shopping for plus size wedding dresses!

Teen broadcasts suicide online
May 26, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

BBC reporters arrested in Iran on suspicion of espionage

At least one team of British reporters for the BBC have been arrested in Tehran, Iran. Officials there say the reporters are suspected of spying on Iran and had the assistance of the British embassy in Tehran. A number of other teams are under investigation for espionage.

“Iran’s security agencies have revealed that several BBC reporters intended to engage in espionage in the Islamic Republic of Iran with the support of the UK embassy, said Foreign Policy and National Security Commission of the Iranian parliament member, Muhammad Karim Abedi. He was speaking during an interview on Iran’s top news agency, the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA).

Abedi did not say how many were arrested and did not specify any names. He alleges the reporters were staying in a hotel under false names, and were planning to organize groups of people that were not in favor of the practices of the Iranian government. He also alleges that the BBC is not in Iran to report on news events, but are in the country “recruiting individuals for intelligence activities.”

“Fortunately, the Iranian intelligence services have arrested one or two teams and a number of other teams are under investigation,” added Abedi.

Abedi also said that many other people involved with the espionage plot have been arrested and that authorities are currently searching for more suspects.

So far neither the British government nor the BBC have commented on the incident.

Go Green – Australia the new hotspot

by

Max Renouf Green home refers to a house that uses both water and energy efficiently as well as uses materials which are user friendly to nature. Green homes are in huge demand in Australia and their main objective is to create less impact on the environment. Many Australians homes have adopted the green spirit as an approach to save the environment in any way that they can contribute. Green homes need to adopt the approach right from the construction up to the point of living. Since the concept of green home is to eliminate the impact the usage of everyday home appliances have on the environment. Household appliances also contribute to global warming and also impacts ones health. Green home construction uses natural products such as mud, sand and straw as well as recycled products. All these will not only contribute towards achieving a natural and chemical free environment but also some regions in Australia where temperature is at its highest these will provide a cooling effect. For some the products mentioned may not seem very rational to be used around the house or some may even think about the feasibility of these products. There are many display green homes which home builders or agencies can show you around, this will give you an idea. However, the concept of green home does not affect the lay out or the structure of dream house. In fact the green homes are no different when compared with normal houses. The only reason is that its constructed with materials closer to nature rather than using artificial materials. The materials that we generally use in our homes contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, which release gaseous particles. This can create a harmful environment for those living in the house. One of the main reasons for green homes to become popular in Australia is because of the weather conditions. Since certain parts of the region can hit very high temperatures whilst others milder, green homes are designed in a way to create a balance between both. You will also find that water saving is at its utmost with green homes. The systems are designed in a manner to eliminate water leakage. Rainwater is also purified so that water is not wasted. Wall insulation and ceilings aims to maintain a constant temperature as well as provides cooling impact within the house. This will save you cost on both your water and energy bills. Green homes are built to create environment sustainability as well as its the latest trend in the construction industry. Theres growing features in green homes being constructed at the moment. Devices such as energy monitoring home dashboards creates more efficiency inside the house as well it helps you to keep track of your spending patterns too. Saudi Arabia fears Hajj swine flu outbreak as four pilgrims die
May 23, 2022 · Uncategorized · (No comments)

Sunday, November 22, 2009

As the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca gets underway, Saudi Arabian authorities have expressed concern swine flu could impact pilgrims. Four, with underlying health issues, have already died.

Two men and a woman in their seventies and a seventeen-year-old girl have died, according to the Health Ministry. The men from India and Sudan, the older woman from Morocco, and the teen from Nigeria. None were vaccinated against the virus.

One died in Mecca, the others in Medina. All had conditions including cancer and respiratory ailments. The World Health Organisation puts the current swine flu death toll at 6,750. Four more people are in Saudi hospitals in critical condition and a further twelve are recovering in hospital.

Each year around three million make the pilgrimage. And, Saudi authorities are concerned about the possible spread of the virus. At least one pilgrimage to Mecca is deemed mandatory for every Muslim capable of doing so. Fifteen thousand extra medical staff are deployed, ports and airports screen incomers with thermal cameras, and hundreds of extra hospital beds have been set aside. Visa requirements specify only those vaccinated against the flu strain can apply.

In September, Egypt forbade hundreds of Muslims from leaving Cairo for the Hajj after an Egyptian woman returning from a more minor pilgrimage last July became the first swine flu fatality in both Africa and the Middle East. For Ramadan, pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia was banned by Iran for the same reason.

U.S. state of Utah begins to accept evacuees from Hurricane Katrina

U.S. state of Utah begins to accept evacuees from Hurricane Katrina

Evacuees from New Orleans arrived on Sunday and have continued to come to Utah, utilizing the facilities at Camp Williams, the training facility for the Utah National Guard, to house the incoming people. Flights from New Orleans to Salt Lake City International Airport provided by JetBlue Airways under a contract from FEMA have been shuttling people from New Orleans to many destinations throughout the United States, including Utah.

In addition, Utah Air National Guard relief missions transporting food and other supplies to New Orleans relief efforts have also been returning with people in the cargo areas of the airplanes on return flights. “In keeping with our mission to assist in the security and safety of our homeland, we stand trained, ready, and able to respond to the call to assist our fellow citizens in Louisiana, Mississippi and elsewhere,” said Maj. Gen. Brian Tarbet, Utah National Guard Adjutant General.

The people on board the airplanes had no idea where they were going. In one case the airplane was headed to San Antonio and at the last minute while still airborne the destination was changed to Utah. Peter Coroon, Salt Lake County Mayor: “Some of the people look dazed. Some of them are just happy to be out of where they were. Some of them are eager to find their loves ones they’ve been separated. Some of them weren’t sure where they were going when they left New Orleans.”

Governor John Huntsman, Jr. utilized surplus state funds by declaring a state of emergency to begin efforts housing and clothing people coming to Utah, however some of this will likely be reimbursed by the Federal Government at a later date. He announced that Utah was willing to take up to 1,000 people at shelters in Utah, and that amount was later increased to over 2,000. On Monday, President Bush signed an executive order granting the emergency declaration in Utah to provide Federal assistance for the evacuees in Utah.

After arriving in Utah, one evacuee said “I want to thank the people of Utah for their hospitality and for restoring my faith in America.” Another evacuee said “it seems like heaven, looking at the mountains and getting a breath of fresh air and saying, ‘Thank God we made it.'”

Not all evacuees were pleased with the move to Utah. “I knew where Utah was, but nobody told me that’s where we were going. Nothing personal. It’s nice. But I don’t know anybody here,” said Bergeron, among the first batch of 152 evacuees to arrive at the Camp Williams Utah Army National Guard training site.

The Utah chapter of the American Red Cross has been training volunteers over the Labor Day weekend, and according to one official they have been overwhelmed with community support to help the evacuees. The line of volunteers to receive the training helping those at Camp Williams was litterally out of the door at the Red Cross offices today. One volunteer, Kayelynn Wright said, “The last couple of days we’d talked about it and said, ‘What can we do?’ So when I saw it (a call for volunteers) last night, I called (my neighbor) this morning and said, ‘We gotta go!'” The Red Cross has asked that you contact the local office if you plan on volunteering or donating any new clothing and other items to help the evacuees.

Volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday gathered at the LDS Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake to assemble more than 50,000 hygiene kits for hurricane victims. Plastic bags were stuffed with toothbrushes and toothpaste, combs, soap, washcloths and hand towels. The supplies will be shipped to a church-owned storehouse Georgia for distribution.

Transportation requests are also being honored by the Utah state government, and evacuees are having transportation to anywhere in the United States paid for at state expense. In addition, a small amount of extra money is being donated directly to each family to help with immediate expenses. The Utah Transit Authority has already established a regular municipal bus service between Camp William and downtown Salt Lake City, which will begin formal service starting tomorrow morning.

The New Zealand government has announced that it will be reviewing funding for medical and dentistry students at Otago and Auckland Universities to certify the institutions’ standards and help staff retention.

The dean of Auckland University’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Iain Martin says the review “can’t come soon enough”.

The Medical Students Association welcomes the review. It says that it has been worried about student debt for years “High debt encourages too many graduates overseas, or into high paying areas of practice at the expense of areas like general practice”
